The main characteristics of the interface of J1939 to J1708 cable

The interface characteristics of J1939 to J1708 cable are closely related to the communication protocols (J1939 and J1708) it is compatible with and the actual application scenarios. The main features are as follows:

Protocol adaptability

J1939 protocol interface characteristics

Based on CAN bus: J1939 is the mainstream protocol for vehicle networking, based on CAN (Controller Area Network) technology, supporting high-speed data transmission (up to 250 kbps) and multi node communication (up to 254 nodes).

Physical layer standards: typically using 9-pin Deutsch DT or OBD-II (ISO 15765-4) interfaces, commonly found in commercial vehicles (such as trucks, buses) and construction machinery.

Data frame structure: Supports complex parameter group (PGN) encoding, capable of transmitting vehicle status, fault codes, sensor data, and other information.

J1708 protocol interface characteristics

Based on RS-485: J1708 is an early serial communication protocol, based on the RS-485 bus, with a low transmission rate (up to 19.2 kbps) and a small number of nodes (usually ≤ 30).

Physical layer standard: often uses 6-pin circular connectors (such as Deutsch DT series) or custom terminals, commonly seen in old heavy-duty vehicles around 2000.

Data frame structure: using simple ASCII or binary formats, transmitting basic content such as engine speed, temperature, etc.
