Application of J1939 to J1708 cable in agricultural machinery

When there are both J1939 protocol devices (such as new engine controllers) and J1708 protocol devices (such as old displays or sensors) in agricultural machinery, cross protocol communication needs to be achieved through protocol conversion cables/modules. The specific functions include:

Data format conversion: Convert the CAN frame format of J1939 to the RS-485 frame format of J1708, or vice versa, to ensure that data between different protocol devices is "recognizable".

Speed adaptation: Coordinate the communication rhythm between high-speed J1939 networks and low-speed J1708 devices to avoid data loss or delay.

System compatibility: Connect to J1939 network without replacing the original J1708 device, reducing equipment upgrade costs.

3、 Typical application scenarios in agricultural machinery

1. Mixed networking of old and new devices

Scenario: A farm upgrades its tractor engine to a new model based on the J1939 protocol, but the original instrument panel, spray controller, and other components still use the J1708 protocol.

Solution: Connect the engine ECU to the dashboard via a J1939 to J1708 cable, allowing the dashboard to read and display J1939 data such as engine speed and fuel consumption.

2. Cross protocol communication between sensors and controllers

Scenario: Agricultural machinery is equipped with soil moisture sensors based on J1708 protocol, but the main control unit uses J1939 protocol.

Solution: Convert the sensor's J1708 data into J1939 format through a conversion cable, and transmit it to the main control unit for analysis and control (such as automatic adjustment of irrigation systems).

3. Display and Multi System Integration

Scenario: The combine harvester is equipped with a J1939 protocol harvesting speed controller and a grain level sensor, as well as a J1708 protocol display screen.

Solution: Use conversion cables to unify the data of each system into J1708 format, and display job status, fault warnings, and other information on the display screen.

4. Remote monitoring and data transmission

Scenario: Agricultural machinery collects operational data (such as operating area and fuel consumption) through the J1939 network, which needs to be transmitted back to the farm management system through the wireless module of J1708 protocol.

Solution: Convert J1939 data to J1708 format through a conversion cable and send it to the cloud via a wireless module for remote monitoring.
